Kids' Drinks Cause Cancer?

This weekend I ended up with the extra "Kool-Aid Jammers" that were given as snacks after my daughter's ball game. There are no ingredients listed on the individual pouch (similar to "Capri Sun," so I had to look them up since both of my kids can't have aspartame. Boy, did I step into a mine field!!

It turns out, the Jammers, among many other drinks, contain chemicals that form benzene (a carcinogen) when mixed together. You can read more here:

I have to comment on something I did this week. I work as a lifeguard at our city pool, and we sell these YUCKY bright colored drinks called Tum-E Yummies. They contain Vitamin C and sodium benzoate. So the kids that I knew really well, I told them that the drinks contain carcinogens and we talked about it at length. They were really surprised. And guess what...THEY ORDERED IT ANYWAY!! It had been marked down to get rid of it, so hopefully when they are gone, we won't be seeing those again!! We now call it "cancer juice" and I hope they wake up soon before I have to attend their funerals!
